Thirteen racers battled through the chaotic late-August traffic to take the grid at the Barn. With a little extra time, we ran three minute heats and finals.

Using the mini-Le Mans layout, familiar from our team races, there was some very close racing right from the off. The first race of the night saw all four cars running on the same lap for nearly two minutes and, by the end, were covered by just 3 laps.

The close racing was a theme of the night. Some racers found some lanes trickier than others, but the action on the track and the scores on the laptop were impressive.

Of the top scores on each lane, only one was by an A final qualifier - that was Alan's 44.50 on red lane. Mike McCann took a top score of 42.65 in blue, Andy 45.52 in yellow and Gareth 42.45 in white.

We switched to a step-up system in the finals, where the winner of each final would step-up to the empty lane in the next final. So the last place qualifier could - in theory - win the race.

And that looked a possibility for Tyler, who romped home in the D final, despite being left the unfavoured blue lane. Richard wasn't too far behind in yellow, with Paul third and Jay bringing up the rear in his first Micro race.

Tyler stepped up in blue in the C final and had a great battle with Andy, just falling short by two and a half laps, but setting the fastest lap of the finals. Mike McCann came in third and championship leader Duncan a worrying fourth.

Andy stepped up to blue lane in the B final and had an incredibly close race with Simon in yellow lane. The two ran side by side for much of the three minutes, swapping the lead when one crashed. In the end, a late crash by Simon handed Andy a second win and another step-up. Behind the front two was Gareth and top junior Jonah.

The A final saw a master class from multiple club champion John. He just about held off a fast-charging Alan, who was visiting from America and racing 1/64 scale cars for the first time. Behind them, Andy and Deane had their own battle for the first half of the race, with Andy comfortably prevailing in the end.

Congratulations to John and Jonah on their medal wins and thanks to everyone for making it such a fun and competitive evening's racing.

Tonight's result leaves a very tight three-way race for the Micro Scalextric Championship, with Simon in pole position before the final team race in October.
